Slip Stitch Knit Headband

This is a simple and classic knitted headband pattern featuring a slip stitch for more stitch definition. Beautiful and fun to use a variegated yarn for effortless color changes. Pretty in a solid yarn, too.

Easy knitting pattern for beginners- Just need to know how to knit, purl and do a slip stitch.

1 hour knitted headband pattern

  • This pattern is knitted in the round and knits up FAST!
  • Adult Average size
  • Skill Level: Beginner/Easy

Materials

  • US Size 11 circular needles 16 inches long, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • About 75 yards of any Super Bulky (6 weight) yarn.
  • I used Malabrigo Rasta and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick
  • 1 Stitch marker
  • Darning needle for finishing
  • Custom tag, if using

Instructions

The Pattern: 2 row repeat

  • CO 42 stitches with your 16 inch circular US size 11 knitting needles.
  • Join in the round, careful not to twist the yarn. Place stitch marker between first and last stitch, slip your stitch marker between each round.

Round 1: *K1, P1,* Repeat from * to * around.

Round 2: *Slip 1 stitch (as if to knit), P1*. Repeat from * to *.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until your headband reaches 5 inches or as tall as you would like.

  • Once you have your headband to your desired height, Bind off very loosely. It’s okay if that edge looks looser than your bottom edge. When it’s worn, you will not see any difference and the more you wear it, the more it will become more symmetrical.

Finishing:

  • Cut yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in.
  • Weave in any loose ends.
  • Attach your custom tag, if using.

Notes

Gauge: 9 st and 13 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette st

Finished Size:

◾Women's average size measures 5 inches tall and 21-24 inch head circumference

Tips and Skills to know:

This headband is worked in the round on circular needles

  • Skills and terms you will need to know: Cast on (CO), knit (K), purl (P), Slip 1 stitch (Sl1) and Bind off.
  • Casting on: When you cast on, make sure you do not pull the yarn too tightly, just relaxed yet even tension.
  • To slip 1 stitch: simply slip the stitch as if to knit it, but instead of knitting it, just transfer it to the other needle. Super simple.
  • Fit of finished headband: I design my headbands to keep your ears warm and hug your head without being too tight. However, if you like a looser fit, you can go up a needle size, or .you may find that after a few wears the yarn will relax a bit. If the edge is too tight, you will want to bind off very loosely and use that edge as the top of the headband and your cast on row the bottom by your ears.
  • This is an easy pattern to modify for different sizes, simply cast on a multiple of 2 stitches and knit it as tall as you would like in the pattern.

I hope you enjoying knitting up this headband!
