Easy Knitted Hat Pattern for Beginners- The Ava Hat
by Hannah Schneider @ Naptime Knitter Design
- This stretchy and textured beanie is knitted in the round
- and knits up FAST!
- Adult size/Women’s medium
- Skill Level: Easy/Beginner
Materials
US Sizes 9 and 11 circular needles 16 inches long, or size needed to obtain gauge.
1 skein (6oz, 106 yd) Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or any Super Bulky (6 weight) yarn
1 Stitch marker
Darning needle for finishing
Custom Tag (if using)
Faux fur pom pom (optional) (shown in my handmade Caramel Blonde color M/L size)
Gauge: 9 st and 13 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette st
Finished Size:
Women’s average size measures 9 inches tall and 21-24 inch head circumference
Tips:
Worked in a 4 row repeat and in the round.
- This is an easy pattern to modify for different sizes, simply CO an even number of stitches and knit it as tall as you would like, allowing for about an inch of decreasing rows.
- Casting on: When you cast on, make sure you do not pull the yarn too tightly, just relaxed yet even tension.
- Decreasing Rounds: You can switch to double pointed needles when you begin decreasing your stitches, but I find the magic loop method works well.
- Fit of finished hat: I design my hats to keep your ears warm, so the ribbing is tighter and less likely to stretch out over time. I like when a hat covers my ears and hugs my head. However, if you like a looser fit, you can go up a needle size or .you may find that after a few wears the yarn will relax a bit. You can also manually stretch out your hat if you prefer a more relaxed fit.
I hope you have fun knitting up the Ava Hat! Thank you so much! Hannah

- 1 Stitch marker

Instructions
The Pattern:
CO 44 stitches with smaller needle (US 9) with even tension, but NOT tightly.
Join in the round, careful not to twist the yarn. Place stitch marker between first and last stitch.
Rounds 1-8: Work in K1, P1 ribbing in the round
4 row repeat pattern begins:
Round 9: Stop knitting with size 9 needles for this row. Knit all stitches onto the size 11 needles.
Round 10: Purl all stitches around.
Round 11: *Knit 1 Purl 1*, repeat from * around
Round 12: *Knit 1, Purl 1*, repeat from * around
Repeat Rounds 9-12 ( 5 times of the pattern repeat or until hat measures 8 inches tall when slightly stretched. I like to end on a K1, P1 row.
– Once your hat is 8 inches tall or your desired length, let's begin to shape the top:(switch to double pointed needles if desired or use magic loop method like me.)
Decreasing rounds:
- Round 1: *K2TOG, K2* repeat from * 33 st remaining
- Round 2: Purl all stitches around.
- Round 3: *K2TOG, P1*, repeat from *. 22 st
- Round 4: *K1, P1*, repeat from * around
- Round 5: K2TOG across the row. 11 st.
- Round 6: K2TOG across the row. 6 st.
Finishing:
- Cut yarn, leaving a 8-10 inches tail for finishing. Using your darning needle, thread end through remaining stitches being careful to go through the middle of each stitch . Pull knitting needle off of stitches. Pull yarn tightly and secure.
- Weave in any loose ends.
- Attach your faux fur pom pom or tags, if using.
