classic knitted beanie pattern, chemo hats, 4 sizes

Classic hats knitted with a super bulky yarn making them fast to knit. Easy/beginner pattern. Quick knitting project for your business or ministry.

Looking for a fast pattern to mass produce hats in a variety of sizes? Look no further!! This classic beanie pattern is versatile for men, women and kids! I have written it in 4 sizes, basically covering most of my family since I have 5 children, plus a hat for myself and my hubby! I love a classic beanie because even my husband likes it, his preference would be navy blue or black. I’m always drawn to the variegated yarns.

As for knitting chemo hats or hats for the homeless ministry (or other ministries where hats are needed), these are quick to knit, so you can make a bunch of them in a short amount of time. It’s great to knit up a hat while watching your favorite tv show or movie. Relaxing and satisfying to create something with your own two hands.

My favorite yarn to use:

For these hats, I use a super bulky yarn. I wanted an acrylic for the chemo hats because it’s so soft. I used Lion Brand Hometown Aspen Tweed and San Diego Navy. The variegated yarn is from Hobby Lobby- one of the Yarn Bee Dream Spun in Delphinium. It’s so pretty!

If I’m knitting for my Etsy business or the homeless ministry, I prefer to use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick n Quick because it’s a wool blend. Extra warm and thick for keeping everyone warm.

Whatever yarn you choose, you’ll want a super bulky (6 weight) yarn for this pattern.

Pom Pom or no Pom?

Well, it depends on the recipient. If I’m knitting a chemo hat or hat for the homeless ministry, I typically don’t put a pom pom on it. If I’m knitting for myself or my Etsy business, I pretty much always add a pom. You can always untie it if the pom is not your style. Easy peasy. They are machine washable too, just no dryer.

I hope you love knitting up these beanies! They are very easy to modify to different sizes. Just cast on a an even number of stitches.

Tools

  • This hat is worked in the round on circular needles.
  • Skills and terms you will need to know: Cast on (CO), knit (K) purl (P) and Knit 2 stitches together (K2TOG).
  • Casting on: When you cast on, make sure you do not pull the yarn too tightly, just relaxed yet even tension.
  • Decreasing Rounds: You can switch to double pointed needles when you begin decreasing your stitches, but I find the magic loop method works well, just pushing the flexible cording of the needle between the stitches as you go.
  • This is an easy pattern to modify. Simply cast on an even number of stitches and knit it as tall as you would like, allowing for 1 inch of decreasing rows.
  • Fit of finished hat: I design my hats to keep your ears warm, so the ribbing is tighter and less likely to stretch out over time. I like when a hat covers my ears and hugs my head. However, if you like a looser fit, you can go up a needle size, or .you may find that after a few wears the yarn will relax a bit.

Notes

  • Finishing for all hat sizes:
    • Cut yarn, leaving a 8-10 inches tail for finishing. Using your darning needle, thread end through remaining stitches being careful to go through the middle of each stitch . Pull knitting needle off of stitches. Pull yarn tightly and secure. Weave in any loose ends. Attach your faux fur pom pom or tags, if using.

If the ribbing section of the hat feels a bit snug, it will relax after a few wears or you can put your hands in it and firmly shape it so the yarn will relax.

I hope you have fun knitting up the 1 hour Classic Knit Beanies! Thank you so much!
