This pattern works up quickly in any bulky yarn. It makes a stretchy and yet comfortable hat. I like hats that don’t feel like they will fall off when I bend over. This one is the perfect amount of stretch without compromising comfort. It stays on my head and don’t feel tight or too loose because of the stretchy texture. It’s beautiful knitted in a solid color where you can see the pattern definition more clearly, but also looks beautiful in a variegated yarn.

Optional faux fur pom poms can be found here.

Stretchy and textured knitted beanie pattern

The Chloe Knitted Beanie

This stretchy and textured beanie is knitted in the round and knits up FAST with a bulky weight yarn.
Adult size/Women’s average size.

Stretchy, thick and comfortable sizing
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Materials

  • US Size 9 circular needles 16 inches long, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • About 90 yards (1 skein) Malabrigo Noventa in Arapey or any Bulky yarn (5 weight). Note: the Malabrigo Noventa is technically called a heavy bulky, but I think it is a bulky weight when compared with other bulky yarns that I use.
  • 1 Stitch marker
  • Darning needle for finishing
  • Faux fur pom pom (optional)
  • Custom Tag, if using

Instructions

The Pattern:

Cast on 48 stitches with even tension, but NOT tightly.

Join in the round, careful not to twist the yarn. Place stitch marker between first and last stitch, slip your stitch marker between each round.

Round 1: *K1, P1*, repeat from * to *.

Round 2: *S1, K1, P1, K1*, repeat from * to *.

Repeat round 1 and 2 until your hat measures 8 inches tall, ending with round 2.

Decreasing rounds: (switch to double pointed needles if desired or use magic loop method, like me.)

  • Round 1: *K2TOG, K1, P1* repeat from * to * 36 st remaining
  • Round 2: *K1, P1, K1* repeat from * to *
  • Round 3: *K1, K2TOG*, repeat from * to *. 24 st remaining
  • Round 4: K2TOG around. 12 st remaining.

Finishing:

  • Cut yarn, leaving a 8-10 inches tail for finishing. Using your darning needle, thread end through remaining stitches being careful to go through the middle of each stitch. I like to go around twice through the remaining stitches. Pull knitting needle off of stitches. Pull yarn tightly and secure.
  • Weave in any loose ends.
  • Attach your faux fur pom pom or tag, if using.

Notes

Gauge: 12 st and 12 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette st

Finished Size:

◾Women's average size measures 9 inches tall and 21-24 inch head circumference

Tips and Skills to know:

This hat is worked in the round.

  • Skills and terms you will need to know: knit (K) purl (P), Slip 1 (S1) and Knit 2 stitches together (K2TOG).
  • Casting on: When you cast on, make sure you do not pull the yarn too tightly, just relaxed yet even tension.
  • Decreasing Rounds: You can switch to double pointed needles when you begin decreasing your stitches, but I find the magic loop method works well.
  • This is an easy pattern to modify for different sizes, simply CO a multiple of 4 stitches and knit it as tall as you would like in the pattern. Just allowing for about an inch of decreasing rows.

I hope you love knitting up the Chloe Knitted Beanie!
