A simple method to attach a faux fur pom pom to a hat/beanie.
Step by step tutorial and video.
Since I am a faux fur pom pom maker on Etsy (since 2017), I get asked this question daily/weekly. Just how DO I attach a faux fur pom pom to a hat? Do I need to use a button for removing it? Do I need snaps? No, and no. Here’s a really simple method to attach a pom pom to a hat!
Keep in mind that faux fur pom poms are MACHINE WASHABLE. Yes, you read that right! There’s really no need to remove your pom pom anyways. I’m sure if you are washing your hat, likely your pom could use a good cleaning too. 🙂

Step-by step Tutorial:
- Evenly lay out the yarn ties for your faux fur pom and grab a darning needle (doesn’t need to be sharp).
2. Find the center of your hat and measure about an inch from the very center. This is where you will be placing your yarn ties (1 inch from the center).
3. Insert your darning needle into the yarn tie and then into the top of your hat, about 1 inch from the very center.
4. Repeat with all of the yarn ties, evenly distributing the ties. If you only have 2 ties, you can just make them across from each other. If you have 4 ties (like how I make them on Etsy), then you will need to do this step with all 4 ties.
5. Holding your pom pom against your hat, flip your beanie inside out. Pull your yarn ties to adjust the pom pom.
6. Tie 2 strings together tightly, making a knot.
7. Then, tie the other 2 together tightly, making a knot.
8. Make a bow with the yarn ties and cut any excess strings.
To remove the pom pom, if you find the pom isn’t your style/gets eaten by the dog (I speak from experience, LOL!), then you can just untie it.
REMEMBER: Faux fur pom poms CAN be washed in the washing machine or handwashed (if your hat is handwash only).
NO NEED TO REMOVE YOUR POM FOR WASHING- they can be washed. 🙂
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS FOR FAUX FUR POM POMS:
- Follow the washing directions for your hat.
- Either handwash or machine wash cool/cold gentle cycle to keep it looking new.
- If your hat is hand-dyed or 100% wool, I would recommend hand wash it. Acrylic or a blended yarn are typically machine washable.
- Comb the wet pom pom to smooth out the faux fur material
- Allow to air dry.
- Absolutely NO DRYER
- Once your hat and pom are dry, comb the pom pom to refluff it.
