This Fair Isle Little Hearts Knitted Hat works up fast in any super bulky yarn! Do you need a quick and beautiful gift? You can knit this fair isle hat with solid yarns for the main color and a different solid color for the little hearts “v”s. I also love to knit it with a solid color yarn for the main color and a variegated yarn for the little hearts. It adds more visual interest and goes with a variety of winter coat colors. Let’s get Started!

Materials

US Sizes 9 and 11 circular needles 16 inches long, or size needed to obtain gauge.
2 different colors of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or any Super Bulky (6 weight) yarn, about 70 yards of main color and 25 yards of color B. The color combos are endless! Shown in Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in Fisherman and Malabrigo Rasta in Mejillion.
1 Stitch marker
Darning needle for finishing
Faux fur pom pom (optional) (shown in my handmade Caramel Blonde color M/L size- Naptime Knitter Design on Etsy)

Tips and Skills to know:

This fair isle knitted hat is worked in the round. One round is knitted with the main color and the next round will have the little hearts (color B) and main color. Carry the hearts yarn color behind the main color as you go.

Main color for the ribbing is A (shown in the ivory color). B is the color for the little hearts.

Skills and terms you will need to know: Cast on (CO), knit (K) purl (P), Knit thru front and back loop (KFB) and Knit 2 stitches together (K2TOG).
Casting on: When you cast on, make sure you do not pull the yarn too tightly, just relaxed yet even tension.
When changing colors, drop the old color and knit with the new color, carrying the yarn behind your work (wrong side/inside of hat)
Decreasing Rounds: You can switch to double pointed needles when you begin decreasing your stitches, but I find the magic loop method works well.
Fit of finished hat: I design my hats to keep your ears warm, so the ribbing is tighter and less likely to stretch out over time. I like when a hat covers my ears and hugs my head. However, if you like a looser fit, you can go up a needle size. Or, you may find that after a few wears the yarn will relax a bit.
This is a pattern to modify for different sizes, simply cast on a multiple of 4 number of stitches. Knit it as tall as you would like in the pattern, possibly adding or subtracting rows if needed. Just allowing for about an inch of decreasing rows.

Fair Isle Little Hearts Knitted Women's Hat Pattern

This knitted beanie pattern is worked in the round on circular knitting needles. 1-2 hour project with just knits and purls. Makes a women's average size knitted hat. Knitted with any super bulky yarn. I use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Fisherman (cream color) and Malabrigo Rasta in Mejillion.

Instructions

The Pattern:

Choose your 2 colors (Noted as Color A and Color B)

With main color/color A, CO 40 stitches with smaller needle (US 9) with even tension, but NOT tightly.

Join in the round, careful not to twist the yarn. Place stitch marker between first and last stitch, slip your stitch marker between each round.

Rounds 1-8: With color A- *K1, P1*, repeat from * around

Round 9: This round you will switch to size 11 needles and increase by 4 stitches: With Color A and using size US 11 needles: *K9, KFB* repeat from * around. 44 stitches total.

Begin Pattern 4 row repeat

Round 10: *K1 (color B), K3 (color A)*, repeat from * around

Round 11: With A- Knit all stitches around

Round 12: - K2 (color A), *K1 (color B), K3 (color A)*, repeat from * around

Round 13: With A- Knit all stitches around.

Repeat rounds 10-13 until hat measures 8 inches tall or desired height, ending with a knit all stitches round.

Decreasing rounds: (switch to double pointed needles if desired or use magic loop method like me.)

Drop color B. Decreasing rounds are worked in color A only.

Round 1: *K2TOG, K1* repeat from *
Round 2: Knit all stitches around
Round 3: *K2TOG, K1*, repeat from *
Round 4: K2TOG across the row.

Finishing:

Cut yarn, leaving a 8-10 inches tail for finishing. Using your darning needle, thread end through remaining stitches being careful to go through the middle of each stitch . Pull knitting needle off of stitches. Pull yarn tightly and secure. Weave in any loose ends. Attach your faux fur pom pom or tags, if using.

If the ribbing section of the hat feels a bit snug, it will relax after a few wears or you can put your hands in it and firmly shape it so the yarn will relax.

Notes

Gauge: 9 st and 13 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette st

Finished Size:

◾Women's average size measures 9 inches tall and 21-24 inch head circumference
