Yes, you can wash your pom and hat in one swoop without removing the pom pom! Yes, you read that right!!
As a faux fur pom pom maker, I work exclusively with faux fur material and have a tried and true method of washing and drying your hat without removing the faux fur pom pom!
Here’s a picture of my knitted hats before I washed them in the washing machine.

Let’s get started!
1. Know your yarn type or hat washing instructions: Is it a 100% wool hat? Acrylic and wool blend? Alpaca? Acrylic? Polyester? Did your hat come with washing instructions? If your hat came with washing instructions or says hand wash only, GREAT! Follow those instructions for the washing part- I recommend washing it with COLD water no matter the fiber. If you’re not sure of the fiber type, but think its acrylic or an acrylic wool blend it can likely go into your washing machine on the cold, gentle cycle or hand wash cycle (like my washing machine). If its a 100% wool or 100% alpaca yarn, it likely a hand wash only hat-use cold water only.
Wash separately from other clothes

2. Once your hat with pom is washed and still wet, take a comb and comb the fur on the pom so the faux fur is smooth, straight and slicked back.

3. Hang to dry. Absolutely NO DRYER! Then, allow your hat and pom to dry completely. I like to hang my hat on a drying rack out of the way (or my toddler will find it and play with it).

3. Once your hat and pom are completely dry, comb it and refluff it! It will be fluffy and the fur should be straight if you combed it out when it was wet.

Dare I say that the pom pom actually look BETTER?!?
4. Enjoy your fresh and clean hat and faux fur pom pom!!
